Details Of Mixed Bhaddu Dal

'Mixed Bhaddu Dal’ is a traditional Pahari dish originating from the hilly regions of India, particularly Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. This dish is a flavorful combination of various lentils, showcasing the diversity of legumes used in Pahari cuisine. To prepare Mixed Bhaddu Dal, a mixture of different lentils, such as moong dal (green gram), urad dal (black gram), masoor dal (red lentil), and chana dal (split chickpeas) is used. Method for preparing Mixed Bhaddu Dal

  • Thoroughly rinse all the lentils and soak them for at least 30 minutes in water. Drain, then set apart.
  • In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and ginger, and cook for about 3 minutes, or until fragrant. Cook for a further minute while continually stirring, until the spices are fragrant, then add the cumin, coriander, turmeric, chilies, and curry leaves.
  • Add the drained lentils and four cups of water, or just enough to cover them completely and an extra inch, and stir. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 45 minutes, or until the lentils are soft but not mushy, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking to the bottom of the pan.
  • While cooking, if more water is required, add it. Remove from heat when finished and allow alone for 10 minutes before serving. If desired, add lime juice and salt to taste.
