Since the formation of Uttarakhand, eight governors have been chosen. The first governor of Uttarakhand, Surjit Singh Barnala, held office from 9 March 2000 to 7 January 2003.

Surjit Singh Barnala was a prominent figure in Indian politics and an Administrative Officer. He was the first Governor of Uttarakhand state from 2000 to 2003. He held the position of Governor of Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh in India from 2004 to 2009. He also served as the Chief Minister of Punjab from 1985 to 1987. Barnala played a major role in Indian politics, advocating for social transformation and a step forward to Indian independence. He was recognized for his leadership and belief in human rights.
