The year 1803 saw the murder of King Pradumn Shah, which was followed by an assault on the Garhwal area by Gorkha soldiers. At the period in question, his son Sudarshan Shah was still a minor and had not yet achieved the age of majority. After attaining the age of majority, he sought aid from the East India Company in order to wrest power of his country back into his hands. He was ultimately successful in doing so.
In exchange for his service, the East India Company promised to transfer him the throne of West Garhwal but stipulated that he had to first cede control over Kumaon, Dehra Dun, and East Garhwal.
After King Sudarshan Shah founded his capital in the town of Tehri, his successors, King Narendra Shah, King Pratap Shah, and King Kirti Shah, respectively, erected their capitals in the cities of Narendra Nagar, Pratap Nagar, and Kirti Nagar. King Kirti Shah was the last member of the Shah dynasty to make Kirti Nagar his capital city. He did so in the year 1350.
